Big Horn Valve

Company Description: Big Horn Valve is a small  Wyoming-based valve manufacturer. Big Horn has developed a new valve technology  based upon a split venturi flow scheme. The venturi off-set technology or VOST  (trademark) takes an ancient flow measurement tool and turns it into a flow control device.

Challenge:The Cryogenics Testbed was asked to provide insight into how to transform Big Horn’s Venturi Off-Set Technology (VOST) valve into a cryogenic valve that could be used in the design of launch vehicles for the U.S. space program.

Solution:The Cryogenics Testbed conducted a valve technology development study for Big Horn. The study resulted in a report outlining suggestions on engineering and material selection, as well  as modification for the VOST valve. Because of the difficult conditions of cryogenics service, as well as the unique design of the valve, Big Horn asked  the Cryogenics Testbed for help in determining a more effective design and material selection. The Cryogenics Testbed worked with Big Horn to develop more  efficient fabrication methods.
