The 200,000 sq. ft. LETF was originally built to qualify Shuttle launch umbilical systems under both ambient and cryogenic test conditions. Today this facility, located north of the Cryogenics Test Laboratory, houses state-of-the-art machine and sheet metal fabrication shops to support advanced prototype development. These shops contain pneumatic, cable, machine and instrumentation shops. The LETF is certified for both liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen test operations with flow capabilities of 50 to 200 gpm of liquid nitrogen and 25 gpm of liquid hydrogen (future plans call for modification of the system to handle 200 gpm of liquid hydrogen). This is the only location certified for liquid hydrogen operation at KSC, other than the launch complexes.
